Magic Menswear

A collection of images influencing this Springs menswear trends in Melbourne. A special day to be celebrating my favourite thing (men) because its 9:09, 09/09/09! excellent!

LOOK 1: Is it just me or has Comme really taken over recently? I have seen so many boys wearing black skirts or kilts (maybe it is Marc Jacobs influence too)

LOOK 2: Soft comfort clothing- oversized knits (or grandpa sweaters) in soft colours; layer upon layer of cashmere or Australian merino. Plain shirts with short collars paired with pants cropped at the ankle (I think this trend originated from Thom Browne) and Brogues from Savers. These images are Hutson.

LOOK 3: Male Boho- commonly seen in little alleys in the city or Brunswick/Smith streets/Sydney Rd. This trend might stem from the recession, but I think it is more of an aesthetic due to social changes, men seem to have recently developed a huge confidence in fashion and are prepared to step away from the usual drab attire that is Melbourne (more specifically; trackies/jeans, t-shirt/hoodie/jumper, runners/thongs). I like this look- moving into spring I think men should rock out with vintage prints & bold colours, rolled pants or shorts, long socks & Doc Martins.

A'fashion worth a'pashing

This is the most incredible platform to show collections; videos! Here is the Gareth Pugh AW09, I love the evolution of fashion marketing, more like art than science of money.

And The Funeral of New Orleans

The last video is incredible, it describes menswear & musical instrument garments for protection from drowning in the sea. The music that is played in the background is particularly evoking too.

Sportsgirl Style Competition

Did a quick photoshoot for a Sportsgirl competition, the mood is like 28 shades of grey through blueberry eyelashes.

Speaking of blueberrys, or rather Burberrys, Lindsay came over today and stole my green burberry trench coat claiming it was his....honestly, what good are boys?

The dress in this image is actually a skirt full of pleats, its polyester but it has the most devine thin buckles at the waist that you wrap around to fit any shape! I bought it in an op-shop on a recent trip to Adelaide.

Some work I created using the ideas of Surrealism; the Dali exhibition is currently in Melbourne and the ideas of abstraction have been permeating through my brain since seeing it. The garments are inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli's glove hat, although made from random inanimate objects not influenced by my consciousness; in my case a Revival shopping bag. The gloves were hand stitched together and the hat was sewn with a sewing machine with the beading detail given to my by my mother who cut it from an op shop dress.

Went to Ocean Grove today to eat chips and fish.

A new puppy has invaded my little cottage and its name is Chloe and it is black and makes little squeaky noises when you are further than 1m away.

Reminds me of Leigh Bowery so much, I feel that some partying with face paint ought to happen soon

or maybe of self portraits by Walter Van Beirendonck

His Winter09 Collection was so awesome, Peter Boyd is his friend because they are both incredibly strange and amazing avant guarde fashion designers who also teach students at fashion school. WVB seems to be big on concepts rather than wearability, like Peter and his leather straps and disintegrating blazers.

He designs for S!X

David after the dentist- endless amounts of amusement.

Today I was thinking about creative people, and the definitions that society places upon creativity in order to bookmark everyone. The limitations of species I think are narrowed to a certain level or narcissism and complete satisfaction with being insular yet a complex understanding of the scope of human emotion and experience.

I think creative people are intelligent in that they understand that a touch of the smarts requires more than a memory, rather a sense of being and existing at each moment and a constant yearning for learning and achieving new ordinaries. New ordinaries being something normal that can happen, but in a different context, or a new environment, analysing entire situations then reconfiguring them, dissecting the essential and replicating it through a scope of imagination- that's what humans are challenged by- in terms of something new- and humans are interested in themselves, how things relate to themselves, and therefore creative people are able to create new cliches for the other people to abide by in a new and interesting way.

Something about Nicola FORMICHETTI's styling makes me gaga.
Also makes me want to do this blog shit all over again.

Esio. My virtual turtle. Malachy wanted to call him Argyle but I told him when we get a real turtle and put him on the balcony with grass and strawberrys and water to swim in then we can name it Argyle, because a name like Argyle implies a certain sophistication that a virtual turtle just doesnt have.

Christopher KANE,
This white fabric has inspired my next collection for menswear. Crisp nude block shapes with french seaming and stif wrinkles, how devine. My highlight garment is pants with drawstrings that run vertically down the leg, that give volume and structure but the fabric is white cotton voile....light and airy. I like it.

An image by Luke SMALLY, taken from Nicola FORMICHETTI.
I just cannot believe how stunning this man is

I think if I was to ever walk by a man so beautiful that my heart would shatter and I would become liquid jelly pulsating invisibly on the pavement.

I met this monkey in Laos earlier in the year, I gave him Malachys shoe with all its lumps and bumps. I wouldnt mind seeing Paris HILTON swap her horrid yappy dog for a little monkey dressed in Louis Vuitton.

A leaf insect on my hand in Malaysia.
A leaf with a heartbeat.

Our primary competition is from other department stores and high end boutiques. Our secondary competition is from high street and independent retailers.

The David Jones merchandise team includes buying & planning teams. There is a limited amount of development for women’s footwear, and this is done by the buyer.

Does David Jones have an internal design team for footwear?
No.

There are 3 women’s footwear buyers, with different customer focus, for example designer brands, fashion brands, and mainstream brands. Each buyer will select the appropriate amount of core items/fashion items/highlight styles for their department/brand.

Is the range balanced at all store levels? For example in Victoria or New South Wales does this range differ depending on customer?
Our ranging is allocated on ‘gridding’ principles, eg downtown stores, better suburban stores etc.
Flagship stores such as Elizabeth St in Sydney & Bourke St in Melbourne will receive different product to lower demographic suburban stores. At state level, there may be a difference in product class allocation, for example boots in Queensland.

How many items (or %) of the range would you classify as core basics?
It will depend on the brand/store.

Have the core basics been kept up to date for the target customer?
Some ‘core basics’ are carried through for several seasons, due to customer demand. Overall, however, key items are updated each season/year.

Is the store area aimed to be merchandised in lifestyles or brands?
David Jones merchandises footwear by brand.

What is the ratio of boots to flats to high heels this winter?
In W09 the mix of boots is around 25%, depending on the brand. We analyse our categories based on silhouette, for example boots, courts, slides, sandals.
